Residency Program
Every year, more than 40,000 social work and counseling graduates enter the field. Yet over 57% of them never become licensed. The Backpack Healthcare Residency Program was built to change that. It is a 24-month intensive training program that helps graduate-level clinicians earn and maintain professional licensure.

Frequently Asked questions

Your Questions, Answered

What kind of supervision will I receive?
Residents get two hours of supervision every week. That includes one hour of one-on-one supervision with a fully licensed, board-approved supervisor, plus weekly group supervision in small groups of up to six. These hours count toward your board's supervision requirements.
Does the program help with licensing exams?
Yes. Residents work through practice exam questions every week, plus dedicated exam prep time. Social work prep is informed by NASW's knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSA) guidelines.
Do I have to work at Backpack to join the Residency Program?
Do I have to work at Backpack to join the Residency Program? Yes. The Residency Program is open only to Backpack Healthcare employees. Both fee-for-service and salaried clinicians are eligible.
Which states is the program available in?
The Residency Program is available to clinicians in Maryland, Virginia, Georgia, Michigan, Kentucky, Kansas, and Rhode Island. The Internship Program welcomes interns from any state.
Can I join the Residency part-time?
Yes. The Residency is open to full-time and part-time clinicians. It's fully virtual, so you see clients and attend supervision by telehealth.
What happens after I'm licensed?
Your growth doesn't stop at licensure. Graduates can join a consultation group, get one-on-one support from a Clinical Manager, and explore pathways into supervision and leadership.
